Anodizing & Electroplating Surface Area & 720 Rule Prepress Guide
Anodizing is an electrochemical conversion process governed by Faraday's laws of electrolysis. To achieve specified coating thicknesses, uniform dye absorption, and MIL-A-8625 compliance, anodizers and precision CNC fabricators must accurately calculate true surface area and rectifier amperage.
Amp-Minutes = 720 * Target_Thickness (mils) * Surface_Area (sq ft)
(where 1.0 mil = 0.001 inches = 25.4 microns)
This means delivering 720 Amp-minutes of DC electrical current to one square foot of aluminum will convert the metal surface into exactly $1.0\text{ mil}$ ($25.4\,\mu\text{m}$) of aluminum oxide ($ ext{Al}_2 ext{O}_3$).
Laser cut and CNC milled plates have substantial edge surface area that is frequently overlooked:
