CNC Digital Oscillating & Drag Knife Prepress Guide
CNC flatbed cutting systems (Zünd, Kongsberg, Colex, Summa, Gerber, JWEI) utilize high-frequency oscillating knives, heavy pneumatic tools, and tangential drag blades to slice through dense foam, rubber gaskets, composite textiles, and corrugated folding cartons. Master the prepress vector adjustments required for clean corners and razor-sharp cuts.
Unlike a laser beam or spinning endmill that cuts symmetrically from its geometric center, a knife blade has physical length and a cutting edge that trails behind the steered C-axis pivot point. This distance is the Swivel Lag Offset ($L_{\text{lag}}$).
Oscillating tools (EOT / POT) move the blade up and down at $100 - 300\text{ Hz}$ ($6,000 - 18,000\text{ RPM}$). If linear feed rate is too fast relative to oscillation speed, the distance traveled per vertical stroke (Stroke Pitch) becomes large ($> 1.0\text{ mm}$), creating a rough, scalloped "serrated bread knife" edge finish.
Stroke_Pitch (mm) = Feed_Rate (mm/min) / (60 * Frequency (Hz) * 2)
Target Stroke Pitch: 0.3 mm - 0.6 mm for mirror-smooth cut faces.
