CNC V-Carve Prismatic Inlay CAM Prepress Guide
Prismatic V-carve inlays allow woodworkers and machinists to produce hairline-tight, perfectly seated inlay artwork with sharp interior corners that round endmills cannot touch. This guide covers the mathematical Z-depth stackup, V-bit selection, and vector preparation.
1. The Prismatic Inlay Principle
Unlike straight-walled 2D pocket inlays where corner radiuses limit detail, prismatic inlays use a angled V-bit ($30^\circ$, $45^\circ$, or $60^\circ$) to carve complementary female pockets and mirrored male plugs with matching draft tapers. When pressed together with glue and clamped, the wedging action forces the seam completely closed with zero surface gaps.
The 3 Vital Z-Depth Parameters
- Female Pocket Depth ($D_{ ext{fem}}$): The total pocket depth carved into the base wood (typically 4.0 mm – 6.0 mm).
- Male Start Depth ($D_{ ext{start}}$): The Z-height above the male plug face where cutting begins. This creates the essential saw blade clearance gap above the base workpiece.
- Male Flat Depth ($D_{ ext{flat}}$): The distance carved below Start Depth. This defines the solid wood penetration depth.
2. Preventing Hydraulic Lock & Bottoming Out
Wood glue is virtually incompressible. If the male plug hits the flat floor of the female pocket before the tapered angled walls seat together, you get a catastrophic gap on the top surface. Always maintain a Glue Reservoir Gap of 0.8 mm to 1.5 mm:
G_glue = D_fem - (D_start + D_flat) // Must be between 0.8mm and 1.5mm!
3. Vector Preparation Checklist for V-Inlays
- Mirror the Male Artwork: The male plug vector must be horizontally mirrored ($X o -X$) before CAM toolpath generation.
- Eliminate Self-Intersections: Crossed vector paths create toolpath gouges that destroy the continuous taper angle.
- Decimate Redundant Nodes: Over-dense vector nodes cause CNC controller stuttering, leaving faceted burn marks on hardwood end-grain.
