Fastener Countersink & Counterbore Vector DXF Guide
Accurate fastener hole sizing and depth calculations are critical for mechanical assemblies. An incorrect countersink angle or insufficient clearance fit causes binding, screw head protrusion, or structural web failure under load.
1. Countersink Standards: 90° vs 82° vs 100°
- 90° Metric (DIN 7991 / ISO 10642 / ISO 7046): The worldwide metric standard. Chamfer angle is exactly $90^\circ$ included ($45^\circ$ per side).
- 82° Imperial (ANSI / ASME B18.6.3): Standard for US unified threads (UNC / UNF). Flatter cone profile ($41^\circ$ per side). Using a 90° metric countersink bit on an 82° imperial screw leaves a high ring along the head perimeter that catches fingertips!
- 100° Aerospace (NAS / MS24694): Ultra-shallow angle used in aircraft skins and composite sheets to prevent cutting through thin structural face plies.
2. Counterbore Sizing (DIN 974-1 / ISO 4762)
Socket Head Cap Screws (SHCS) require a cylindrical counterbore with flat bottom seating:
M3 SHCS: Counterbore Ø 6.5 mm × Depth 3.5 mm (Through-hole Ø 3.4 mm)
M4 SHCS: Counterbore Ø 8.0 mm × Depth 4.5 mm (Through-hole Ø 4.5 mm)
M5 SHCS: Counterbore Ø 9.5 mm × Depth 5.5 mm (Through-hole Ø 5.5 mm)
M6 SHCS: Counterbore Ø 11.0 mm × Depth 6.5 mm (Through-hole Ø 6.6 mm)
M8 SHCS: Counterbore Ø 14.5 mm × Depth 8.5 mm (Through-hole Ø 9.0 mm)
3. Laser Cutting vs CNC Milling Fastener Holes
- Laser Piercing in Thick Metal: Laser pierces produce thermal spatter and slight angular taper ($1^\circ - 3^\circ$). Always program an off-center circular lead-in arc inside the hole slug.
- Helical CNC Milling: For counterbores, helical ramp pocketing distributes cutting force evenly and eliminates entry plunges. Maintain chip loads between 0.05 mm and 0.15 mm per tooth.
