2. Draft Angles & Thermal Heat Expansion
When heated to 105°C – 140°C (220°F – 285°F) on a platen press (Heidelberg Windmill, Kluge, or Bobst), metal dies expand while the heated polyester carrier film releases the metallic aluminum foil layer:
- Draft Angle (15° to 25° Bevel): All raised engraving ridges must taper outward at a 15°–20° draft angle. A vertical 90° sidewall will trap paper fibers, causing tearing and foil picking on press.

- Blind Embossing: Uses a female brass/magnesium die paired with a male counter-die (epoxy/phenolic counter) to deform paper upwards with zero ink or foil. Vectors must incorporate a paper caliper gap offset (typically 0.15mm – 0.35mm depending on paper weight from 300 to 600 GSM).
- Combination (Foil + Emboss in 1 Pass): The die cuts and releases the foil while stretching the paper in a single press stroke. Vector outlines must have micro-rounded apex peaks to prevent the hot metal sharp edge from cutting through the paper sheet.
