1. Multi-Stage Shrinkage in the Jewelry Casting Lifecycle

Every piece of fine jewelry cast via the lost-wax or direct resin burnout method experiences multiple compounding reductions in physical volume before reaching the customer. Failing to compensate for this cumulative loss in the initial 2D vector or 3D CAD drawing causes undersized ring finger sizes, loose stone prong seats, and failed snap-fit clasps.

Multi-Stage Shrinkage Chain:
1. Vulcanized Rubber Mold Shrinkage: 1.5% to 2.5% (High heat & pressure cure)
2. Injected Wax Pattern Solidification: 0.4% to 0.8%
3. Molten Precious Metal Phase Transition: 1.5% to 3.0% (Liquid-to-solid cooling contraction)
4. Magnetic Tumbling, Lapping & Polishing Loss: 0.10 to 0.20 mm stock removal
Alloy-Specific Metal Cooling Contraction:
  • 14K Yellow / Rose Gold: $1.8\% - 2.0\%$ (Specific Gravity: $13.07\text{ g/cm}^3$)
  • 18K Yellow Gold: $1.6\% - 1.8\%$ (Specific Gravity: $15.50\text{ g/cm}^3$)
  • 925 Sterling Silver: $2.1\% - 2.5\%$ (High thermal conductivity, rapid freeze)
  • 950 Platinum / Ruthenium: $2.6\% - 3.2\%$ (Extreme melting temp $1768^\circ\text{C}$)

2. The Mathematical CAD Compensation Formula

To produce a finished ring or pendant at exact nominal dimension ($D_{\text{final}}$), scale your initial 2D vector paths and 3D wireframes using the inverse contraction multiplier:

Scale Multiplier (M) = 1 / (1 - Total Cumulative Shrinkage Fraction)
CAD_PreCast_Size = (D_final + Polishing Allowance) × M

3. Sprue Feeder Hydraulics & Solidification Directionality

In centrifugal or vacuum-assisted induction casting, the molten gold or silver must fill the investment plaster cavity instantaneously. If a narrow sprue gate freezes before the thick main body solidifies, the contracting metal inside the body will draw a vacuum and create shrinkage porosity (hollow internal micro-voids that ruin polishing).

4. Minimum Feature Limits for Master Pattern Vectors
