MOPA Fiber Laser Color Marking Prepress Engineering Guide
Color marking with a Master Oscillator Power Amplifier (MOPA) fiber laser creates permanent, iridescent colors on Grade 5 titanium and stainless steel without inks or dyes. This guide explains thin-film optical interference physics, pulse width tuning, and layer-separated vector workflows.
1. The Physics of Thin-Film Optical Interference
MOPA fiber lasers generate color through controlled thermal oxidation rather than burning pigments. When the laser heats the metal surface in the presence of ambient oxygen, it forms a transparent titanium dioxide ($ ext{TiO}_2$) or chromium oxide ($ ext{Cr}_2 ext{O}_3$) ceramic film. Light waves reflecting off the outer oxide surface interfere constructively or destructively with waves reflecting off the underlying metal substrate:
2 × n_oxide × d × cos(θ_r) = (m - 0.5) × λ
By tuning the laser energy to grow oxide layers between 40 nm and 280 nm, you create precise hues: Gold (45 nm), Purple (105 nm), Blue (135 nm), Cyan (165 nm), and Green (210 nm).
2. Pulse Duration Tuning: Why MOPA is Mandatory
- Standard Q-Switched Fiber Lasers (Fixed ~100-200ns): Deliver massive peak energy per pulse that instantly boils and pits the metal surface, resulting only in dark gray or frosted white marks.
- MOPA Fiber Lasers (Adjustable 2ns – 350ns): Ultra-short pulses (2ns to 15ns) deposit rapid thermal energy into the surface without shockwaves or material ablation, enabling flawless specular oxide films.
3. Multi-Color Vector Preparation Workflow
- Color Separation by Wavelength: Separate raster artwork into distinct vector layers grouped by target hue.
- Hatch Angles & Cross-Hatching: Use double-hatch cross patterns ($0^\circ$ and $90^\circ$) at 3 µm to 6 µm line pitch to eliminate micro-banding.
- Wocal Spot Defocus: Shifting the Z-height by $+1.0\, ext{mm}$ to $+2.0\, ext{mm}$ expands the laser beam waist, providing smoother thermal distribution.
