Pad printing (tampography) transfers 2D images onto irregular, 3D, curved, cylindrical, or textured substrates such as medical devices, automotive switches, golf balls, promotional pens, and injection-molded enclosures. Because the process relies on a precision-etched cliché plate (typically etched to a depth of only 20 to 25 microns), the input artwork must meet exacting vector standards.

1. Anatomy of Pad Printing Prepress
In pad printing, the image is etched as an intaglio pattern into a cliché plate (water-wash photopolymer, alcohol-wash polymer, thin steel, or hardened tool steel). An ink cup equipped with a ceramic doctor blade sweeps across the plate, flooding the etched cavity and shearing off excess surface ink. A silicone pad compresses over the etched well, picks up the thin film of tacky ink, and transfers it onto the target object.

2. Why Raster Artwork Fails in Cliché Etching
Attempting to produce a pad printing film positive from a raster JPG or PNG file causes three fatal manufacturing defects:
- Doctor Blade Ink Scooping: If an etched area is wider than ~2mm without a screening pattern, the ceramic ring will dip into the cavity and scoop out ink. Raster grayscale fuzz makes controlled screening impossible. Vector artwork allows automated 300 LPI 86° dot screening.
- Ragged Edge Sawtoothing: Anti-aliased gray boundary pixels partially expose the photopolymer plate, creating an unstable, shallow micro-shelf along the edge that flakes off during washing or press runs.
- Micro-Text Fill-In: Medical and industrial product markings often require 4-point type and regulatory symbols (CE, RoHS, UL). Raster pixelation causes font counters (openings in 'e', 'a', 'o') to fill with ink.
3. Prepress Vector Specifications Checklist
- Color Mode: 100% Solid Black (K=100% / #000000). Zero RGB tinting or grayscale transitions.
- Film Polarity: Right-reading positive (or emulsion down negative depending on whether chemical etching steel or UV exposing polymer).
- Minimum Positive Stroke: 0.06 mm (0.17 pt) for crisp ink release from silicone pads.
- Minimum Reverse (Knockout) Stroke: 0.10 mm (0.28 pt) to prevent ink bridging across small gaps.
- Pad Distortion Compensation: Pre-warp vector geometry if printing on extreme spherical or conical geometries.
