Not all SVG files are created equal. In modern computer graphics and manufacturing, three common pitfalls ruin production:
- Fake "Wrapped" SVGs: Many free conversion tools simply embed a base64 PNG or JPG inside an
<image>tag. Laser cutters (Glowforge, LightBurn), vinyl plotters (Cricut), and CNC mills cannot cut raster images because there are no mathematical vector coordinate paths. - Node Bloat & Machine Stutter: Naive auto-tracers generate tens of thousands of microscopic anchor points. When sent to laser or CNC machines, the controller pauses at every node, creating burned edges, mechanical vibration, and slow cut times.
- Unclosed Contours: Engravers and pocketing CNC operations require closed loops. Open segments cause toolpath errors or inverted cutouts.
