1. Zero-Joint vs. Grout-Seam Kerf Offsets
In high-end architectural stonework, clients demand either a seamless zero-joint (where stones touch with only 0.25mm of clear two-part flowing epoxy) or a uniform grout channel (1.5mm to 3.0mm):
- Male Inlay Pieces: Cut with an outside toolpath offset. In standard waterjet software, the toolpath centerline is shifted outward by
(Kerf_Width / 2). For seamless zero-joints, apply a negative stock allowance of -0.12mm to accommodate adhesive bondlines. - Female Background Pockets: Cut with an inside toolpath offset. The centerline is shifted inward by
(Kerf_Width / 2)with a positive clearance allowance of +0.12mm.
2. Preventing Tile Blowout: Vacuum Assist & Low-Pressure Piercing
Dense porcelain (Dekton, Neolith) and fragile natural marbles (Crema Marfil, Carrara) are prone to hydraulic shock fractures during initial waterjet piercing:
- Low-Pressure Piercing (10,000 - 15,000 PSI): Begin piercing at reduced hydraulic pressure before ramping to full 60,000 - 90,000 PSI cutting pressure.
- Abrasive Vacuum Assist: Ensure garnet abrasive reaches the cutting head before the high-pressure water stream activates to prevent hydro-spalling.
- Circular Arc Lead-Ins in Scrap: Always locate pierces at least 3.0mm inside the scrap drop area with a smooth tangent arc lead-in. Never pierce on a part boundary.

Thin stone filigrees and acute tips narrower than 3.0mm can break under high-pressure water turbulence during table drainage. Add micro-tabs (0.5mm - 0.8mm width) or mount the slab to a fiberglass mesh backer before cutting.
