Vehicle Wrap Panel Stretch & Distortion Prepress Guide
Wrapping commercial delivery vans (Ford Transit, Mercedes Sprinter, RAM ProMaster) presents significant challenges due to deep corrugated body recesses and compound 3D curvatures. This guide explains pre-stretch vector compensation, vertical tile overlaps, and post-heating physics.
When flat printed vinyl is stretched into a 25 mm deep recessed body channel, the graphic is forced to bridge a 3D arc distance that is significantly longer than the flat 2D blueprint opening. Uncompensated logos will appear stretched, distorted, and washed out in color density.

To ensure circular logos and typography appear completely normal after installation into a deep recess, prepress designers pre-compress the horizontal vector geometry by the exact pre-distortion scale factor. When the installer stretches the heated film into the groove, the graphic expands into perfect 1:1 proportion.
Cast vinyl films (such as 3M 2080 or Avery SW900) possess elastic memory. If the stretched film is not heated past its plastic transition temperature (95°C to 105°C / 203°F to 221°F) using an infrared thermometer and heat gun, it will shrink back over time, lifting out of the groove (pop-out failure) and peeling away.
Because commercial van walls exceed standard 54" and 60" print roll widths, prints are segmented into vertical tiles with a 12–20 mm overlap. Seams should always overlap from back to front (like roof shingles) so that wind resistance and high-pressure vehicle washes do not catch the seam edge.
