PRECISION WATERJET MACHINING & 5-AXIS CAM
Abrasive Waterjet Taper & 5-Axis CAM Prepress Guide
Abrasive waterjet (AWJ) cutting uses a supersonic stream of water mixed with 80-mesh garnet abrasive ($800 - 1,000\, ext{m/s}$) to slice through thick metals, composites, and stone. However, as the abrasive stream penetrates deep into the material, it loses kinetic energy, resulting in two fundamental geometric distortions: Stream Lag (the exit stream trails behind the nozzle) and Kerf Taper (the kerf is wider at the top than the bottom).

1. Types of Waterjet Taper
| Taper Profile | Occurrence Cause | Typical Angle | CAM Solution |
|---|---|---|---|
| V-Taper (Standard) | Fast cutting speeds; stream loses energy at bottom | $0.5^\circ - 3.0^\circ$ | Tilt 5-axis head into the part by half the taper angle |
| Reverse / Barrel Taper | Very slow feed rate (over-eroding bottom of cut) | $-0.5^\circ - -1.5^\circ$ | Increase feed rate; reduce abrasive mass flow rate |
| Corner Kickback (Washout) | Sudden 90° direction change without deceleration | Local hollow gouge | Insert corner loop or tangent arc lead-in in DXF vector |
2. Vector DXF Geometry Prepress Rules for Waterjet
- Corner Loops: When 5-axis dynamic tilt is not available on a 3-axis table, add triangular or circular corner loops ($R = 1.5 imes ext{Kerf}$) to external corners to let the trailing stream exit the material before redirecting.
- Lead-In / Lead-Out: Always use 90° tangent arc lead-ins ($3 - 6\, ext{mm}$ radius) placed in scrap areas. Direct straight piercing on the finished boundary will cause an oversized crater due to the initial hydraulic shockwave.
- Closed Path Verification: Ensure all DXF geometry consists of continuous zero-gap polylines ($G01/G02/G03$) to prevent CAM feed pauses that leave localized dwell craters.
