Laser Cutting & CNC Vector Guide: Preparing Clean SVG & DXF Paths
Whether you operate a Glowforge, xTool, OMTech CO2 laser, Shapeoko CNC router, or Cricut vinyl plotter, laser cutters and CNC machines cannot cut raster images directly. They require mathematical vector toolpaths.

Cut Lines vs. Raster Engraving: Laser cutters can "raster engrave" a bitmap by sweeping back and forth like an inkjet printer. But to cut through acrylic, wood, or leather, the machine must follow continuous vector paths (SVG or DXF) in vector cutting mode.
1. Why DXF and Clean SVG Matter for Laser Cutters
Software like LightBurn, RDWorks, Glowforge App, and AutoCAD rely on vector definitions:
- DXF (Drawing Exchange Format): The universal standard for CAD, CNC milling, plasma cutters, and waterjet machines.
- Clean Continuous Nodes: Poor vector traces have thousands of redundant anchor points that cause the laser head to stutter and burn material edges. High-quality vectorization creates smooth spline curves and minimal nodes.
- Closed Polygons: Cutting machines need closed vector loops to correctly differentiate the interior scrap from the exterior part.
2. Preparing Hand Sketches and Artwork for Laser Cutting
- Draw your design with clean black ink on white paper, or create high-contrast digital art.
- Convert the image into mathematical vector curves with true arc and spline fitting.
- Import the resulting DXF or SVG directly into LightBurn or your machine software.
- Assign stroke colors: red for cut lines, blue for score lines, black for fill engraving.
