Screen Printing & Embroidery Vector Prep: Color Separation and Clean Line Art

Every commercial screen printer or embroidery digitizer will tell you the same thing: "Send us vector artwork (EPS or SVG), not a JPEG." Screen printing requires burning separate film positives for every ink color, which is impossible with blended, anti-aliased bitmap pixels.

1. Key Requirements for Screen Printing Vector Art

• Solid Color Planes: Each color layer must be an independent, closed vector object with discrete spot color fills (Pantone PMS or standard CMYK values).
• Converted Text / Outlined Fonts: All typography must be converted to vector curves to prevent font substitution errors when opened on RIP software.
• No Stray Anchor Points: Clean paths without microscopic floating nodes that can jam automatic film output setters.
• Proper Trapping & Underbase: For printing on dark garments, clean vector outlines allow the print shop to easily create a choked white underbase plate.

2. Preparing Art for Embroidery Digitizing (DST / PES)

Embroidery software (Wilcom, Hatch, Brother PE-Design) cannot digitize embroidery stitches directly from a fuzzy photo. The digitizer must trace vector outlines to define satin stitch directions, fill angles, and underlay density. Having clean SVG or EPS vector curves cuts digitizing time from hours to minutes.
