1. Critical Vector Requirements for CNC Plasma Tables

Unlike vinyl plotters or standard paper printers, CNC plasma cutting involves extreme heat, ionized gas jets, high piercing currents, and kerf widths ranging from 0.8mm (0.035") up to 2.5mm (0.100"). Low-resolution raster images (PNG/JPG) cannot be sent directly to CNC CAM software like SheetCAM, Fusion 360, or ProNest without proper vectorization.

Closed Path Loops Only

Every internal cutout and outer perimeter must form an unbroken, mathematically closed polygon or spline. Open gaps cause CAM software to abort toolpath generation or leave uncut steel tabs.

Bridge Tabs & Stenciling

Enclosed islands (such as the centers of letters A, B, D, O, P, R, 0, 4, 6, 8, 9) must be bridged to the outer plate using structural tabs so they remain attached to the finished metal sign.

Lead-In & Pierce Clearance

Plasma pierce holes create an initial blowout crater. Vector geometry must provide sufficient clearance inside scrap waste areas for lead-in arcs before cutting the finished edge.

2. Minimum Feature Size & Kerf Rules by Sheet Metal Thickness

To avoid excessive thermal distortion, slag blowback, and burned-away delicate features, adhere to the minimum spacing rules based on plate gauge:

Generic raster auto-tracers (like basic Inkscape or web converters) produce DXF files that cause catastrophic failures on plasma tables:

4. Stenciling Letters for Decorative Steel Signs

When turning logos or typography into cut metal signs, bridge tabs are mandatory. For 14ga steel, create bridge tabs at least 2.5mm to 3.0mm wide. For heavy 3/16" fire pits, increase bridge width to 4.5mm - 6.0mm to support thermal expansion and structural weight.
